Youth Entrepreneurship

This introductory unit provides the foundation for understanding what is meant by ‘sustainable livelihoods’. We will begin by locating our understanding of sustainable livelihoods within the larger context of sustainable development through the study of its origins. To fully appreciate the processes and approaches involved in promoting sustainable livelihoods, it is imperative that you become familiar with the related concepts. Here, you will be introduced to important concepts including sustainability, livelihoods, youth livelihood, and assets, which are key components of the term ‘sustainable livelihoods’.

The principles that underpin the notion of sustainable livelihoods will also be reviewed. We will then begin to explore the sociocultural, political and economic
priorities of sustainable livelihoods, as well as its uses, benefits and challenges. It is very important for you to understand these foundational areas if you are to grasp and utilise the sustainable livelihood approach to promote and support the creation of innovative opportunities for sustainable living by young people.
